allie? >> reporter: we checked in with the spokesperson of the bridge and she said everything is on schedule. we are on the newark side or the eastern span, you can see where they are doing the work. where the cranes are and where the scaffolding is is. that's where the work is taking place. this is video from caltrans, where they broke apart the bridge and broke away the concrete in the middle of the dunbarton, they will insert metal plates and allow the bridge to bend. it will give it flexibility in an earthquake and make it safer. cal tran crews will close the gap by inserting new plates. >> we are in the beginning of laying down the base plates. it as long operation that can take us into the middle of the day or the afternoon. then, there is well-being and concrete pours to set it. and beams that go on top of it. >> once all the plates are

installed. they will pave and smooth over the gap so the drivers won't notice a thing. over the memorial day, they did the exact same work on the western span of the bridge. over the memorial day weekend, they finished the job early. coming up in a half hour. we will hear what the project spokeswoman has to say. allie rasmus, channel 2 news. alternate routes are being recommended. this is the san mateo bridge. they are open this weekend instead of the usual seven so you can make your way across the water. this is highway 237 to the south bay. this is the southern way and traffic is moving along just fine. they believe a hit and run accident was gang-related before 10:00 last night. they received a 911 call about

a verbal dispute between several people on nunez driver and flicker avenue. they hit a 42-year-old woman and 32-year-old man. they arrested 23-year-old driver. the victims were taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. take a look at these pictures. a wrong way driver running a red light caused a crash that sheared off a fire hydrant. this is the area of 12th street and castro a vehicle making a legal turnpike sending the car over the curb and into the fire hydrant. they arrived on the scene to turn off the water. all the injuries are nonlife threatening. bay area police will be out in force looking for drivers who are under the influence. a thousand drivers may have been stopped at a checkpoint in richmond. one driver even had an open beer between his legs when he came through the checkpoint. he was also under the age of

21. >> so the legal limit would then be a zero for the zero tolerance rules. any measurable amount would be a violation of dui law. the check points were in effect last night in south bay, oakland and san francisco. they are investigating two separate shootings including one that killed a man. that was at 30th street and martin luther king boulevard. they found a man suffering from one gunshot wound. he was pronounced dead at the scene. no arrests have been made. investigators are looking into a shooting on davis street. once the victim was taken to the hospital, he was in stable condition. religious leaders are praying for an end to the violence. they walked through the streets and including high crime areas and international boulevard. the community must stand

together to keep the neighborhood safe. >> we all have the same purpose and the same goals. that's to bring our city back to where it used to be. the walk ended with a community festive where mayor jean quan and larry reed addressed the crowd. they want the food trucks to help the homeless. former supervise hour helps to stuff the truck with 12 to 14 homeless people. he directs the organization hope. and said it will provide better options that have liquor stores and fast food. they hope it will offer the homeless a viable way to make a living. a champion went into effect last month. the city is now offering panhandlers a small stipend to help with puppies. applicants will not be allowed to panhandle on the streets. they will be screened to be able they are sure they can care for a dog and they should

and burlingame and asked if she wanted to earn money. in both instances, girls walked away. the first individual is a balanced-headed man in his 40 -- bald-headed man and the second is has black hair and glasses. a teenager was found safe after being kidnapped from her home in henderson, nevada. >> they found melissa durant, bound and blindfolded on p the floor. less than 20 hours after she was taken and held for ransom. two men are in custody and they may be connected to a landscaping company owned by her father. at 7:30 in the morning, a parents' worse nightmare occurred. a young girl was abducted from her home. >> officers say it appears duran put up a fight during the

the whales beached themselves in fort pierce yesterday. they have hundreds of volunteers rushing down to the beach to help. they tried to cool them down and right side up to help them breathe. >> they were getting crushed by the waves and they kept turning sideways and they were drowning because whales are mammals and need oxygen to survive. >> despite all the efforts only five of those whales survived and they were taken to a fishery for rehabilitation. whale watchers in southern california witnessed a pretty unusual sight. two blue male whales were having fun. and this was taken from a whale watching boat. the two were landing on top of each other out there. the boat's captain said he had never seen anything like it before. >> the gulf coast may be cleaning up and some part of the country are welcoming the heavy rain. in the midwest, they are suffering from the worse drought in years and

person was injured and taken to kaiser hospital. the condition of that person is not known. ktvu's allie rasmus is just arriving on scene and will have a live report soon. also following developing news out of san francisco. highway patrol is trying to figure out what caused a van to fall off the freeway and right into the cal train yard. these are exclusive photos to ktvu from the scene. the accident happened on 16th and vermont, on southbound 101. you can see there the van is completely smashed in. the driver was transported to the hospital. we are still trying to find out his condition. happening now, if you travel between san mateo and alameda counties it may take you longer to get where you're going this weekend. the dumbarton bridge is still closed and will be closed until 5 a.m. tuesday morning for work to make the bridge safer in an earthquake. during the closure, crews will be replacing seismic joints on the eastern side of the main deck of the bridge with a larger joint. the new joint will raise the deck 5 inches and allow it to move 42 inches in the event of

an earthquake. >> once it's all said and done it's a smooth, nice steel strip across the six lanes. >> 60,000 drivers a day typically take the dumbarton bridge. here is a live look at one of your alternate routes for drivers. 10 lanes at the toll plaza on the san mateo bridge are open instead of the usual 7. drivers are take highway 237 if they need to get around through the south. in overnight news, santa fe police say they believe a hit and run accident was gang- related. just before 10:00 last night, officers received 911 calls about a verbal dispute between several people at nunez drive and flickenjer avenue. a 42-year-old woman and 32-year- old man were hit by a car leaving the scene. police tracked down that car and arrested the 23-year-old driver. the victims were taken to the hospital and are expected to be ok. well, water was sent shooting into the sky in oakland overnight. police say a wrong way driver

ran a red light and crashed into a fire hydrant. it happened around 2:30 this morning in 12th street and castro. several people were hurt but they're expected to be ok. crews twhr on scene to turn off the water. police in san francisco are trying to figure out what led to a crash that killed a man on a motorcycle around 9:40 last night right near a police station. officers heard the accident and responded. the man died at the scene. foggy conditions may have been a factor in a crash in sonoma county this morning. just before 5:30 the c.h.p. received a report that a vehicle hit a power poll near doyle road. pg&e was called out to deal with the power lines and nobody was hurt. bay area police will be out in force this weekend looking for drivers who are under the influence. officers say as many as 1000 drivers may have been stopped last night at a d.u.i. checkpoint in richmond. police say one driver, even had an open beer between his legs when he came through that checkpoint, and that driver wasn't even 21.

>> so the legal limit then would be a zero, a zero tolerance rule. so any measurement amount, it would be a violation of d.u.i. law. >> at least eight d.u.i. checkpoints were in effect last night in the south bay, oakland and san francisco. oakland police are investigating two separate shootings, including one that killed a man. it happened around 9:15 last night at 53 exprd martin luthur king, boulevard when officers arrived they found a man suffering from at least one gun shot wound. he was pronounced dead at the scene. so far no arrests have been made and investigators are also looking into a shooting on davis street late last night, in which the victim was taken to the hospital in stable condition. we also have an update to the shooting we told you about yesterday on mornings on 2. oakland police say two people were hurt after a gunfight that ended in the parking lot of a kentucky fried chicken. one victim has critical injuries. police say two people were detained. [ horns honking ] religious leaders in

oakland are praying for an end to the city's violence. a couple of dozen people marched through the city yesterday, calling for peace. they walked through high-crime areas, including international boulevard. marchers say the community must stand together to keep their neighborhoods safe >> we all have the same purpose and same goal. that's to bring our city back to where it used to be. >> the walk ended with a community festival, where oakland mayor jean quann and city council president larry reid spoke to the crowd. today friends and family are gathering at a hospital where a san jose firefighter has been placed in a coma after suffering a heart attack on the job. frank ryan has been in a medically induced coma at san jose regional medical center since he collapsed at the scene of a fire at st. patrick's cathedral on thursday. last night, members of that church held a vigil for ryan. firefighters have also gathered at the hospital to support the family. more than 1000 people who live in louisiana's st. tameny

parish have been ordered to evacuate their homes. emergency officials are concerned about a lock on the pearl river canal. they say it could fail due to flood waters from hurricane isaac. officials say opening some valves has released pressure on the lock, but those evacuations remain in place. now, if the lock failed, a wave of about 11 feet of water could flood homes. some people in louisiana are seeing what's left of their homes for the first time since the storm. many people didn't even have time to grab personal items. some people were spared from total destruction, but other people found their stuff destroyed when water completely flooded their home. >> we can't do anything, really. i mean i consider the house pretty much uninhabitable. >> if it was on the ground, we're going to you know, after it's safe, we're going to keep it. >> the remnants of isaac are dumping heavy rain in missouri and illinois. the national weather service says at least two tornadoes touched down, but no damage has been reported.

president barack obama is getting ready to head to louisiana tomorrow. he is going to tour the damage caused by hurricane isaac. on friday, republican candidate mitt romney skipped a campaign stop to tour the damage and meet with storm victims. we're two hours away from the start of oakland's third annual l.g.b.t. festival, northern california's second largest pride celebration. more than 50,000 people are expected to attend, and 60 artists on four stages are scheduled to perform. that festival begins at 11 a.m. and goes until 7 p.m. at 20th and broadway streets. the oakland museum of california will conduct a special tour in honor of today's pride celebration. it will highlight the history and achievements of the state's lesbian, gay, by sexual and trans gender community. the tour begins at 1 p.m. at the museum's history gallery. and also today the city of petaluma will hold a giant celebration for their little league champs. festivities begin at 1 this afternoon with the parade starting at walnut park. each player will ride in a

convertible hot rod or classic car. there will also be a city proclamation to the team. fans can take pictures with the players, with donations going to a fund-raising drive to help the little league team from uganda. good morning to you. our afternoon highs will rebounded to near the seasonal average, meaning 5 to 10 degrees above yesterday's highs. a live look outside our doors. the marine layer, definitely a shallower, less extensive marine layer this morning. anywhere from 800 to 1000 feet. yesterday it was 3000 feet, so a third of what we had on saturday. and we are waking up with mostly sunny skies inland, even areas near oakland, san jose waking up with blue skies. now with this switch in the weather pattern, the ridge of high pressure beginning to build in is going to bring us the warm-up. it's also bringing us that sinking air associated with high pressure. that is brought on patchy dense fog along the coast, and areas where we woke up with clear skies over parts of the north bay, allowing all that heat to

flee, well we have actually reached our dew point, waking up with patchy dense fog in santa rosa as well as napa. some of us enjoys mostly sunny skies and some of was visibility down to a quarter mile. this will be the case over the morning. we'll begin to see it improve, it's already mixing out just a little bit. over the next hour or so that patchy dense fog will dissipate and we'll be left with mostly sunny skies. right now 52 in santa rosa. santa rosa started out right about 45. so seeing an improvement this morning. 54 in napa. already 63 in fairfield. so again, 61 livermore. where most of us with mostly clear skies started out anywhere from 3 to 6 degrees cooler at the start of the morning, now beginning to see that turn around. and for the afternoon, temperatures will soar. 83 for petaluma today, 83 for navarro. 80 san rafael, 71 in sausalito for the art festival. if you go r. going to the east bay, 76 in oakland for the pride festivities going on there. maybe going to watch the a's play this afternoon. it will be nice and mild.

[ screaming ] >> that crash happened saturday at the monster air 2012 show in harrisburg, which is near eugene. three people were hit by the truck's 48-inch tires and had to be taken to the hospital. fortunately, their injuries are not considered life threatening. well, a pilot performing at an air show in iowa was killed when the plane he was flying crashed and exploded in front of thousands of spectators. >> he's down. >> oh! >> the accident happened yesterday at the quad city air show in davenport. home video appears to show three planes flying in formation when the soviet era military jet on the right started to fall to the ground and then it exploded. federal investigators are looking into the cause of that crash. no one on the ground was hurt. new this morning, pilot

error and contamination of fuel tanks likely caused a fatal plane crash at long beach airport last year. that's according to investigators with the national transportation safety board. five people died when the plane crashed at the long beach airport in march of 2011. investigators say fuel truck contamination caused that plane to lose power during takeoff. they also say the pilot could have likely regained control of the plane if he had undergone more training. in election 2012 news, at the top of the hour, president obama will speak at the university of colorado in boulder. air force 1 landed at buckley air force base outside of denver last night. colorado is a toss-upstate in the election. it's the president's second visit to colorado in a week, and his seventh this year. during a stop yesterday in iowa, another battle ground state, the president summed up the republican convention. >> if you didn't d.v.r. it, let me recap it for you. well, house democratic leader nancy pelosi will be among the bay area speakers at the democratic convention. it officially opens tuesday. at the time warner cable arena in charlotte, north carolina, first lady michelle obama will speak that night. former president bill clinton will address the convention on wednesday night. and vice president joe biden will speak thursday night around 6:30 pacific time. president obama will deliver his acceptance speech around 7 p.m. from the 70,000 seat bank of america football stadium. we will have live coverage of the democratic national convention for you all week long, beginning tonight. ktvu's ken pritchett will report from charlotte through thursday, when president obama is scheduled to address delegates. the chief of staff for a u.s. immigration and customs enforcement or i.c.e. is resigning. at least three employees have made allegation of inappropriate sexual behavior against suzanne bar. the complaints are related to a sexual discrimination and retaliation lawsuit filed by senior i.c.e. agent in may.

barr was appointed by the obama administration and had been a long-time aid to the secretary of homeland security. well, new this morning, the u.s. is temporarily halting its program to train local afghan police. insurgenting posing as afghan recruits have recently attacked american instructors. at least five were killed last month. the u.s. says it needs time to properly vet recruits. it's important to note, only local police training is suspended. 350,000 afghan soldiers and national police officers are not affected. a new mobile job store is helping military veterans get back into the workforce. it's called hero to hired website. it helps veterans narrow down employment searches match their interests and site. they're visiting 200 cities across the nation providing information about job openings. there's only 10 stops in california and tomorrow and tuesday, organizers will bring their mobile truck to travis air force base. they'll set up at the air force support center from 2 to 6 p.m. tomorrow, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

were murdered after being kidnapped and sexually assaulted. a bridge over lake hodges will be named after 17-year-old chelsea king. the teenager went missing during a run back in february of 2010. a portion of the highway near the san diego zoo safari park will also be named after amber dubois. dubois went missing in february, 2009, but her remains were not found until march of 2010. john gardner was found guilty of killing king. he also questioned to killing dubois. the fremont united school district is trying something new this year. they are working to prevent teen dating abuse. the school board voted to proclaim next february dating violence awareness month. according to the contracosta time, fremont is one of four school districts in california to officially say teen dating violence is a major issue. now, according to the national statistics, 10% of high school students have been hit or abused by their dating partner. 20% of teenage girls who experience dating violence don't attend school because they do not feel safe.

and more than 70% of teens reported that their dating partner spread rumors about them by cell phone or on social media sites. the state legislature has abandoned debates on a controversial bill that would change the way teachers are evaluated. the bill would create a uniform teacher evaluation system that would be used statewide. teachers would also receive more performance reviews, and classroom observation. opponents say the bill would burden financially-strapped districts, but supporters say they plan to bring it up in the next legislative session. health officials are warning parents to be on high alert after a rise in whooping cough cases. so far this year there have been more than 28,000 cases reported across the nation. that breaks the record set back in 2010, when there were more than 27,000 for the entire year. california was the heart of the last record outbreak in 2010. a reported one-third of all cases with 9000 people being affected. 10 infants died from the

north bay valleys, as well. napa and santa rosa both reporting visibility down to a half mile in some cases. when it is patchy and dense, it catches you off guard. you may have clear skies and then a wall of fog right in front of you as you're driving through. be careful, upper 50s, low 60s outside the door right now. starting to see a rebounded in the temperatures around the bay area. areas near napa started out in the 40s, and now 52 degrees. so an improvement there as well. the marine layer being compressed and pushed down to the ground level, this by high pressure. that's going to bring us the warmer weather in the afternoon. if you are headed to tahoe it will be nice here as well. 70s in the forecast with mostly sunny skies. the overnight lows a bit chilly, down to about 40 degrees tonight. and for labor day evening, if you're sticking it through. your mostly sunny skies will again be was through the afternoon, and the warmer conditions, as well. 88 for concord, 89 livermore, 83 san jose. along the peninsula, upper 70s to low 80s. from san mateo down into

breaking news out of vallejo. two people transported to the hospital, and an investigation into an officer-involved shooting is under way after shots fired and a neighborhood there overnight. welcome back to mornings on 2, everyone. it's sunday, september 2 and i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. that breaking news is still going on out there right now, when news of this officer- involved shooting in vallejo came across early this morning. it happened on pepper drive and b.w. williams drive. you're look at video just received into the newsroom within the last hour. police say they opened fire during a traffic stop when they saw a weapon in a car and they say they felt threatened. two men were shot and taken to the hospital. a woman who told us that she is the mother of one of those men tells us her son has died, but police have not confirmed that yet. police have told us the men in the car did not fire shots at the officers. ktvu's allie rasmus will have a live report coming up. we're also following

breaking news out of san francisco. the c.h.p. is trying to figure out what caused a van to fall off the freeway and into a cal train yard. these are exclusive photos to ktvu from that scene. now the accident happened near 16th and vermont on southbound 101. you can see the front of that van completely smashed in. the driver was transported to the hospital. we are still trying to figure out his condition. and here is a look at some of the other top stories we're following this morning. if you travel on the dumbarton bridge, get ready to find an alternate route. the dumbarton bridge is closed again today and it will reopen at 5 a.m. tuesday. crews are performing work to make the bridge safer in an earthquake. today friends and family are gathering at a hospital where a san jose firefighter has been placed in a coma after suffering a heart attack on the job. a vigil was held for frank ryan last night. and san jose police say a hit and run was gang related. it happened before 10:00 last night in the area of nunez drive and flickenjer avenue.

investigators say there was a verbal dispute and when the driver tried to leave he allegedly rammed into a woman and a man. officers were able to track the driver down and arrest him. firefighters say exposed electrical cords may have sparked a fire at a commercial warehouse in menlow park overnight. that fire broke out around 11:45 at a warehouse on haven avenue. when firefighters got there, they found a 10-foot stack of wooden pallets burning. the fire caused about $25,000 in damage to the building. peninsula authorities are investigating two separate cases of men trying to lure teenage girls into their cars. a 16-year-old girl said the man approached her on the 400 block of mastic an in san bruno thursday afternoon. a few hours later a 13-year-old girl says a different man drove alongside her in the area of dwight road and bay water avenue. he asked if she wanted to earn some money. in both cases, the girls walked away. the first suspect is described as a bald-headed man in his 40s. second man in his 30s with short blond hair, and wearing

black framed dark glasses. well, new details this morning about a missing teenager who was found safe after being kidnapped from her home in henderson, nevada. members of a s.w.a.t. team found 17-year-old melissa duran bound and blindfolded on the floor of a las vegas apartment yesterday. less than 24 hours after she was taken and held for ransom. two men are in custody and detective says they may be connected to a landscaping company owned by duran's father. >> on friday at 7:30 in the morning, a parents' worst nightmare occurred. a young girl was abducted from her home. >> officers also say it appears duran did put up a fight during her abduction. in albany woman accused of stabbing an elderly man to death in his kennington home will plead guilty. she is accused of stabbing the 81-year-old man in the chest last month. a caretaker says he and the

woman were romantically involved. but argued frequently. oakland police are investigating two craigslist related robberies that happened within 24 hours of each other. on friday night they say a person was robbed at gunpoint while meet 5g craigslist seller near 73rd avenue. and yesterday a potential car buyer was robbed at gunpoint near 62nd avenue and outlook. if you are looking to make a purchase from craigslist, police have issued some safety tips for you. and you should insist on a public meeting place. also consider having a friend accompany you and use a cashier's check or money order instead of cash. vallejo police have arrested two teenagers suspected in a spring of burglaries. a woman on the 100 block of canyon way called police yesterday afternoon. she said someone kicked in her front door and she was hiding in the bathroom while one person ransacked the home and the other acted as a look out. they have been identified as 19- year-old carl bohns and 18-year- old michael clark aspects by police and police say further investigation revealed those two might be responsible for other burglaries in the area.

well, union city police officer has resigned after being convicted of a misdemeanor count of lewd conduct in public. back in february 2 women accused 37-year-old shaun mace of expoagz himself in a fremont home. mace was arrested in april and placed on paid administrative leave. last month he was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to pay an $800 fine. a san jose man has been arrested for causing trouble at a house party near redwood city after he was kicked out. that 20-year-old man showed up uninvited to the party on hurling game avenue early yesterday morning. he was asked to leave but then punched the host and later returned, allegedly firing a single shot through a window. no one was hit by the bullet. he was arrested shortly after the incident. if cause of a fire that destroyed two homes in concord is under investigation this morning. that fire broke out just after 2:00 yesterday morning, in a garage of a home on margo drive. within minutes, the flames had spread next door. everyone inside those homes got

out safely. after a neighbor saw the flames and started banging on their windows. smoke alarms inside the houses did not go off. fire officials say responding to the fire was a bit of a challenge because the closest fire station was down one engine crew because of budget cuts. no one was hurt. political activists plan a labor day rally outside chevron's richmond refinery tomorrow morning. they accuse the oil giant of polluting the air from the bay area to the amazon. they want company executives prosecuted for last month's fire. demonstrators expected to attend include war prophetter cindy sheehan will demand the country nationalize the energy industry and run it under labor and community control. a wildfire continues to threaten homes in mendocino county. two more houses were burned yesterday, bringing the total to seven homes destroyed. more than 20 additional houses are still threatened. the fire has burned nearly 41,000 acres and is 58% contained. a santa rosa man is facing charges after authorities say

he threatened a fire with a shotgun after a fire came upon a marijuana garden. it happened during evacuations on thursday. good morning to you. a warm finish is in store for the second half of your holiday week. giving you a look here over oakland. blue skies this morning. plenty of sunshine, in places we saw plenty of cloud cover just yesterday morning. concord, livermore, san jose, all waking up with sunny skies over the north bay, we have patchy dense fog to contend with that for the next hour or so. we're seeing it along the coast as well. the trough that brought us the cool-down earlier in the weekend now out of here. a ridge of high pressure pulling in from the desert southwest. that will warm us up. anywhere from 5 to 8 degrees from the coast to the bay. inland 10 to 12 degrees for the afternoon. this high pressure and the sinking area associated with it really compressing that marine layer. it's about a third of what it was yesterday morning. and it is now down towards the

ground, bringing patchy dense fog. so along the coast as well as the north bay valley locations, napa, santa rosa, and back to the coast, half moon bay reporting visibility anywhere from a quarter mile to half mile visibility. so it's a tough one if you are going to be out driving, out and about it 4r take another hour or so before it finally starts to dissipate and burn off. cool start, but now numbers already starting to warm in areas like fairfield, 63 degrees, 61 in livermore, 60 san jose. around the bay, 50s, 57 in oakland, 58 for hayward. into the north bay. mid 40s to mid 50s is where we started the morning. now 52 in santa rosa, 54 in napa, and for the afternoon, we are look at, again, seasonal temperatures rebounding back to where we belong in napa. 85 for you today, 85 in santa rosa, 80 degrees for san rafael. 71 in sausalito for the art festival today. 76 in oakland, if you're going to the pride celebration for the afternoon. 78 in hayward. upper 80s to low 90s for the inland east bay. danville 88, 89 for livermore. into the south bay, santa

clara, valley looking good. and warm, 90 degrees morgan hill, 87 los gatos. 83 in san jose. if you're headed to santa cruz for today, sunny and warm. 78 expected for the afternoon. 82 redwood city. 77 san mateo, 74 san bruno. 70 in the city is going to be a nice day in the city, although this morning waking up with the fog and it could be a little patchy and dense in your neighborhood as well. the extended forecast, the warm- up will continue. temperatures soaring above average by labor day monday. by tuesday, though, subtle changes may be a tad cooler in some spots. a little bit of a bigger cool down will come wednesday and thursday. back to the desk. well, the gulf coast may be cleaning up from flooding coseyed by hurricane isaac but some parts of the country are welcoming the heavy rain. in the midwest farmers have been suffering from the worst drought in years and they are desperately hoping for significant rainfall. rainfall in missouri is nine to 15 inches below normal. and isaac isn't going to erase the losses from the droughts

but farmers are hopeful they could see three to five inches of rain. the drought is also having a disastrous effect on many of the foundations of homes. because of the lack of moisture that is causing the soil to crack. foundation and basement repair specialists say they can barely keep up with the demand. one expert says damage to homes is probably the worst since the 1950s, and could end up costing more than a billion dollars. insurance rarely covers damage caused by drought. several large protests are planned at the democratic national convention. they include a demonstration by illegal immigrants, about three dozen of them are riding a bus from arizona to charlotte. they say they want to put a face on immigration, and stop deportations. >> i've been here for 16 years. life as an undocumented person is not easy. it's hard. being -- knowing the fact that one day you may not return home. the worst feeling ever, i have a seven-year-old. >> the undocumented workers say the u.s. deports illegal

immigrants every day by loading them up onto buss and transporting them from arizona to mexico. san jose based grocery chain mi pueblo fused announced it will start checking whether future employees are eligible to work in s. they say it will use the e verify system to confirm employment status through government records. the store says the program will not affect current employees. in recent months, the chain has come under fire from some workers who say it punishes people who complain about working conditions. mi pueblo says it complies with all labor laws. san francisco wants to use food trucks to help the homeless. they hope to staff a sole food truck with 12 to 14 home lings people. dusty who now directs the organization hope says the truck will provide better food options in a neighborhood with mostly liquor stores and fast food. city officials hope that truck is going to offer the homeless a viable way to make a living. another city program

championed by dusty did go into effect last month. the city is offering panhandlers a small stipend to care for puppies from shelters to make them ready for adoption. in exchange the applicants aren't allowed to panhandle on the streets. the city says applicants will be screened to make sure they can care for a dog. applicants must be living in supportive housing 1k3-g not on the streets. the a's, i guess it's safe to say they're a very hot team. today they look to sweep the red sox out of town. >> plus police are on the scene of an officer involved shooting. >> and a live look outside. this is highway 24 in lafayette. no problems there, out there in the east bay. it's 9:43. this is mornings on 2.

good morning to you. mostly sunny outside our door. for many, some of us dealing with a little patchy dense fog. temperatures holding in the mid 50s toe low 60s at this hour. changes are coming to the way guards watch over napa state hospital. according to the napa valley register, starting friday, hospital officials plan to close four observation kiosks surrounding the fenced hospital area. and in exchange, you're go doing establish a follow plan where the guards will now rotate between the other kiosk station. that plan was spelled out in a letter from the office of labor relations earlier this month. houses in sacramento are drawing the attention of bay area home buyers. according to the sacramento bee, developers in a subdivision surrounded by vineyards drawing in buyer loss want the same feel of the napa valley but at a cheaper price. the homes are on five acres of land and cost a million to 1.4 million dollars. similar sized homes in the napa valley cost between 3 to 5

yard touchdown pass from quarterback zach maynard to freshman wide receiver chris harper. nevada, though, retook the lead on this two yard score with 36 seconds left in the game. they would go on to beat cal 31- 24. now despite the loss, cal's newly renovated stadium received rave reviews from students and alumni. >> three! two! one! san francisco. yesterday the giants got all the offense they would need from newly called up xavier natey. he was a giants growing up in salinas. he went to cal and went right to work, clearing the bases with this double in the 1st inning. tim lincecum took advantage of that run support tiking out 7 over 6 and a third. giants win 5-2, and have a four and a half game lead on the dodgers. one day after beating if red sox 20-2 the a's bats stayed hot. they scored 4 in the 3rd inning, two on this brandon inning double. just minutes after he dislocated his right shoulder. that was his last at bat of 2012. he will have season-ending surgery on that shoulder. but the a's still won it 7-1. they'll try their ninth straight win today. as they go for the sweep against the red sox at the coliseum this afternoon. marine biologists are trying to figure out a heart- breaking mystery in south florida. a pod of 22 pilot whales beached themselves in fort pierce yesterday and that prompted a massive rescuist.

you can see some of the hundreds of volunteers that rushed to the beach to try to help those whales. they poured water over the whales to try to cool them down and tried to keep them right side up to help them breathe. >> they were getting crushed by the waves and kept getting turned sideways, their blow holes were covered with water, they were literally drawing because whales are mammals and need oxygen to survive. >> despite the effort, only five whales did survive and they were taken to a fishery for rehabilitation. whale watchers in southern california witnessed an unusual sight. it seemed as if the two blue whales you're looking at right now, two males were fighting near dana point yesterday. the video was taken from a whale watching boat and the captain said he had never seen anything like it before. >> they could be playing, too, don't really know, but >> we don't know. >> but exciting video to see. i love watching whales. starbucks trying something new. how they are recycling old food products and turning them into something you can use at home. >> a warmer day is under way for your sunday afternoon. we'll look at what you can

we're continuing to follow breaking news of that officer- involved shooting in vallejo. it happened early this morning on pepper drive and w.b. williams drive. channel 2 reporter allie rasmus is live at the scene to explain why police say they opened fire during that traffic stop. ali. >> reporter: claudine, this shooting happened outside a home on pepper drive and b.w. williams drive. the crime scene is right here behind us. two men in their mid 20s were shot by vallejo police officers. they were sitting in that white thunderbird car that you're looking at. the two men were related. one was the brother-in-law of the other. and the family of those two men confirms that one of the two men died from his injuries at kaiser hospital in vallejo this morning. >> i been at the hospital, and they refusing to let me see him. and they -- they told me it was a forensic thing. almost 8:00, and then they came out and told me that he had

died at 5 something this morning, and they refused to let me see my son. >> reporter: now this officer- involved shooting happened just after 4 this morning. witnesses tell ktvu that the two men were sitting in that white car parked in front of a family member's home. two vallejo police officers pulled up in front of the car, told the men to put their hands on their heads. one of the victim's sisters says she was looking out the window of the family home and she says she watched her brother and brother-in-law do that, put their hands on their head. she says a short time after that police opened fire and she did not know why. a vallejo police sergeant told ktvu this morning a different story. he wouldn't say why the officers were here, why they approached this car in the first place but that sergeant says the two officers spotted a gun inside the vehicle, felt threatened, and that's why they opened fire. that sergeant told us that the two men in the car did not end up firing the gun. it was only the officers who fired their weapons in this shoot-out that happened here. now obviously, this is a

developing story. they have the street closed off. you can see some of the evidence markers on the street, and that white vehicle where these two men were shot is still parked in the middle of the street. and off to our left here there are a number of community members who have come out, and they're asking questions, they're concerned about what happened. and a short time from now, we are going to go over to vallejo police, and talk to someone, talk to one of their lieutenants on camera to get more information about this. we'll have more on this story on ktvu channel 2 news at 5 today. live in vallejo, allie rasmus, ktvu. more airports across the nation rupp dating their terminals. san francisco and sacramento are two airports in our area that have seen the biggest changes in recent years. many cities are throwing in millions of dollars for improvements. aviation officials say the upgrades are needed to accommodate the growing number of passengers. in 1960, 62 million passengers boarded planes at u.s. airports. last year that number went up to more than 800 million. aviation officials estimate the total number of passengers will go above 1 billion in the next

decade. starbucks is experimenting with a new food recycling program, instead of dumping its left over coffee grounds and pastries, the company wants to put them through a bio refinery process. that process involves turning food waste into materials that can later be used in plastics and laundry detergent. tomorrow is the last day of operation for a favorite roller coaster at the santa cruz beach board walk. you might have ridden the hurricane. it's going to be dismantled and shipped to its new owner the western play land amusement park in new mexico, and now that 20-year-old hurricane is going to be replaced by a ride called undertow. the five and a half million dollar rotating ride is being built in germany right now and should be in santa cruz by next summer. the sand castle building competition gets under way in san diego today. this is some of the works of art created yesterday. organizers brought in 300 tons of sand for the contest. the grand prize is $20,000. the sounds of grease will
